Ilyas Ahmed Mohamed
My name is Ilyas Ahmed Mohamed and I work at Copenhagen Parcel Center in Denmark. I came to Denmark from Somalia a few years ago and when I was at the asylum center, I came into contact with the parcel center via a friend.
I work as a night sorter in a team that does different types of parcel-sorting tasks to enable the parcels to be delivered to customers the next day.
Job provides an identity
I really like my colleagues and my job because I feel that I have an identity and am contributing to Danish society.
I often work more during certain periods so that I can save up some hours. This allows me to visit my family, who don’t live in Denmark, for longer periods.
Parcels under the Christmas tree
I’d like to tell you about a night at work that was a bit special.
“Who can do overtime tonight?” we hear from the loudspeakers one evening just before Christmas. My teammates and I are working as fast as we can, but there are parcels as far as the eye can see. I stay late, along with most of my colleagues.
On a night like this, reality exceeds the forecasts and it’s all about doing things as quickly and well as we can. A bit like a soccer team – we go out onto the pitch together and know it’s going to be a tough match that we can only win if we stand united.

On such a December evening the parcels are different because people have put greater effort into them than normal. And it gives us a boost to think that they’ll be going to a child or an adult who’ll put them under the Christmas tree.
We’re tired when our supervisor gathers us together. But when we hear the words, “We’ve broken our record. Well done!” then we break into applause and smile. This is celebrated a few weeks later when we’re invited to a social gathering with food.
When the Christmas period arrives, I get the chance to take a few extra days off. And, as a Muslim, I look forward to Ramadan. That’s when my colleagues and managers help me so that I can eat later than we normally do.
