People living in the Nordic countries have already bought Christmas presents online worth SEK 4.3 billion

Christmas shopping in the Nordic countries is in full swing. Consumers in the Nordic region have spent SEK 12.4 billion on Christmas presents so far. The e-commerce proportion of total Christmas shopping has grown steadily in recent years, and the trend appears to be continuing. In the Nordics, shoppers have already bought Christmas presents online worth SEK 4.3 billion.

By November 25 four out of ten people in the Nordic region had already purchased Christmas presents. But how far people have got with their Christmas shopping varies between the countries. More than half of Norwegians have already bought Christmas gifts, compared to just 36% of Danes.

Christmas shopping has also picked up momentum on the Internet; 18% of consumers in the Nordics have already shopped for Christmas presents online this year. In Norway 24% of people have bought Christmas presents online, compared to 18% in Sweden, 17% in Finland and 15% in Denmark.

“When Christmas shopping gets under way, little differs between the Nordic countries. However, this past weekend Christmas shopping really took off throughout the Nordic region – not least on the Internet, where many stores offered price cuts,” says Arne Andersson, e-commerce expert at PostNord.

Clothes, books, toys and home electronics are the Christmas presents that most consumers in the Nordics have purchased online so far this year.

“With three weeks left to Christmas, this is the most hectic time of year for many people. Increasing numbers of Nordic consumers are realizing how convenient it is to buy Christmas presents online and have them delivered to partner outlets or directly to their own mailbox at home,” says Arne Andersson.

It looks as though this year’s online Christmas shopping will beat all previous records. The survey shows that consumers in the Nordic region will shop for their Christmas presents on the Internet to a value of SEK 16.2 billion this year.
