New EU-regulations July, 1st 2026

2026-07-01 10:20

Going forward, customs duties will be charged on all packages sent from countries outside the EU.

This means that packages from non-EU countries with a value of up to 150 euros will be subject to a flat customs duty of 3 euros per item. If your package contains several different types of items, the customs duty is charged per item type.

Example: One package – multiple customs payments

A package contains:

  • 1 pair of cotton socks
  • 2 wool sweaters

Since the items belong to two different product categories, they are treated as separate line items. This means that a total of 6 euros in customs duties will be charged.

For shipments valued at over 150 euros, the existing customs rates remain unchanged.

Customs duties are charged at checkout

Under the new EU rules, the sender is required to ensure that both customs duties and VAT are paid when the order is placed.

If VAT is paid when the order is placed, it is important for the buyer to be aware that the online store must also collect customs duties. If not, the package will be returned to the sender.

If neither customs duties nor VAT have been paid through the online store, you will receive an invoice for both, including an administrative fee from PostNord, before your package can be delivered.

What does this mean for you?

  • Going forward, a flat customs duty of 3 euros per item will be charged for packages valued at up to 150 euros
  • If you paid VAT when placing an order on a website, you must also pay customs duties. Otherwise, the package will be returned
  • If you paid neither customs duties nor VAT when placing an order on a website, you will receive an invoice from PostNord. The package will not be delivered until payment has been completed
  • For packages valued at over 150 euros, the current customs rules apply
  • If you return an item, you generally will not receive a refund of the customs duty
  • For packages containing personal gifts valued at less than 45 euros, no customs duty or VAT will be charged. Remember that the shipment must be correctly declared as a gift.
