Everything e-commerce teams need to know before shipping parcels worldwide.
What are the main international shipping methods?
The three primary modes of international shipping are:
- Air freight — fastest transit times (typically 2–7 business days intercontinental), suited to high-value goods, time-sensitive orders, and lightweight e-commerce parcels. PostNord's Merchandise Mail Plus and EMS International Express products use air transport for priority delivery.
- Ocean/sea freight — cost-effective for large, heavy, or bulk shipments where transit time is less critical. Standard for full container load (FCL) and less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo.
- Road freight — the backbone of intra-European and Nordic cross-border logistics. PostNord's road network connects Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland with fast groupage and pallet services across the region.
For most e-commerce shipments, PostNord uses consolidated air transport combined with postal or courier last-mile delivery in the destination country, giving businesses the speed of air at accessible price points.
What is the difference between DDP and DAP shipping?
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) and DAP (Delivered At Place) are international trade terms (Incoterms) that determine who pays import duties and taxes, the sender or the recipient.
- DDP — the sender (your business) covers all costs including import duties, VAT, and customs clearance fees. The recipient receives the parcel with no unexpected charges at the door. This delivers the best customer experience and significantly reduces failed deliveries caused by surprise import fees.
- DAP — duties and taxes are collected from the recipient upon delivery. This shifts the cost burden to the customer but requires less upfront outlay from the sender. It can lead to higher refusal rates, particularly on lower-value orders.
PostNord supports both DDP and DAP for cross-border shipments into Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. For shipments into Norway specifically, PostNord also supports the VOEC (VAT On E-Commerce) scheme, which simplifies VAT collection on B2C orders below NOK 3,000.
Does PostNord offer international returns solutions?
Yes. PostNord provides cross-border returns management as part of its international logistics offering. Return services are available for e-commerce businesses shipping into and out of the Nordics, with options including:
- Pre-paid return labels included in outbound shipments, allowing customers to drop off returns at local service points in the destination country.
- Digital return portals that generate return labels on demand, reducing the cost of including physical labels in every outbound parcel.
- Consolidated return flows for high-volume merchants, where returns are collected, sorted, and shipped back to the sender in bulk, reducing per-unit return costs significantly.
Returns into Norway from abroad also require re-import customs documentation. PostNord manages this as part of an end-to-end returns solution, removing the compliance burden from the merchant.
How does PostNord reduce the environmental impact of international shipping?
PostNord is committed to reducing the climate footprint of logistics across its entire network. For international shipping, the key sustainability measures include:
- Nordic Swan Ecolabelled delivery — PostNord's domestic Nordic services carry the Nordic Swan ecolabel, the official Nordic environmental certification, available on selected international routes where final-mile delivery uses the PostNord network.
- Shipment consolidation — parcels are consolidated at PostNord hubs before air transport, reducing total flights and per-parcel emissions compared to individual carrier services.
- Electric last-mile fleets — PostNord is progressively electrifying its Nordic delivery fleet, and final-mile deliveries in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland increasingly use electric vehicles.
Businesses can request sustainability reporting as part of their PostNord service agreement, providing CO₂ data per shipment for ESG reporting purposes.
Are there items that cannot be shipped internationally with PostNord?
Yes. Certain goods are prohibited or restricted across all PostNord international services, in line with IATA regulations, destination country import laws, and universal carrier policies. Items that cannot be shipped internationally include:
- Dangerous goods classified under IATA/IMDG regulations (explosives, flammable liquids, compressed gases)
- Lithium batteries shipped as standalone units (batteries installed in devices follow separate rules)
- Cash, banknotes, and negotiable financial instruments
- Counterfeit, pirated, or IP-infringing goods
- Perishable foodstuffs without appropriate temperature control arrangements
- Goods prohibited by the laws of the destination country (e.g. certain food products, plant matter, tobacco, alcohol — restrictions vary by market)
Restricted items, those that may be shipped under specific conditions or with additional documentation, include batteries in devices, cosmetics, and food supplements. Contact PostNord's business team to confirm requirements for your specific product category before shipping.
How many countries does PostNord ship to internationally?

Can PostNord handle customs clearance for international shipments?
Yes. PostNord is a recognised specialist in customs and duties processing across all major trade corridors. For shipments into the Nordic countries, particularly Norway, which is outside the EU, PostNord manages full import processing including VAT and duty calculations.
