SWEDEN: E-COMMERCE IN THE NORDICS 2026 - SPRING

Swedish payment and checkout behavior - spring 2026 🇸🇪

Payment preferences are evolving in Swedish e-commerce. Swish has now surpassed both credit cards and invoices as the most popular and used payment method and continues to grow in popularity across all age groups. As Swish continues to expand its functionality, such as enabling recurring payments and broader integrations in e-commerce checkouts, it is also becoming easier for retailers to offer the payment method across a wider range of purchases.

57% of Swedish consumers consider a smooth checkout important when deciding where to shop from

This highlights how important a smooth checkout experience has become. Today, 57 percent of Swedish consumers say that a smooth checkout is important when deciding where to shop online, up from 46 percent in 2025.

Used and preferred payment methods during last purchase

At the same time, it has become more common for consumers to cancel their purchases during checkout since 2024. The most common reason for cancelling a purchase is because the shipping price was too high. If shipping costs, delivery times, or return conditions do not meet expectations, it is easy to abandon the purchase and choose another retailer. A growing trend among online shoppers is using the checkout as a “save for later” tool rather than the final step to purchase. For retailers, this suggests that the sale isn’t secured at checkout, customers can still change their minds.
